The Sedative Effect

Setting:  Post-op recovery room at local ambulatory surgery center

Characters: 

The Cuban restaurant, Camden Locks, London 2007

 

• James (in hospital gown with paper bonnet on his head; just waking up from sedative)
• Dianne (drinking bad waiting room coffee)
• Nurse (in bright purple scrubs)

DIANNE (to James):  I like the bonnet!
JAMES:  It's my beret.

[Nurse enters and begins to remove paper bonnet from James's head]

DIANNE:  Oh, we liked the beret!
NURSE:  Would you like to keep it?
JAMES:  It has a sort of Che Guevara effect.

[Later, James has no recollection of this conversation.]
