The Labrador retriever genes are stronger than a lifetime spent in the desert. Casey can't get enough of the lake! We're up at my family's cottage on the northeast shore of Lake Ontario for a few days, and he's loving it. I have to put him on a leash and attach him to something immoveable (yesterday a tree, today my mother) to keep him from following me out into the lake when I go swimming. Not having had much practice at it in his 10 years in Tucson, he doesn't have much stamina when it comes to the doggie paddle. But he hates to be left behind!

So I spend a few minutes playing in the shallows with him, and let him swim out a little ways a couple of times, then tether him while I do my swimming and he barks nonstop until I come back in and let him play in the water again for a few more minutes. If it were just up to him, I think he'd stay in there all day. His favorite game is Bite the Wave (see photo 2). Maybe next summer I'll get him a doggie life jacket so he can join me in the deep waters...
