A Trowel a Day

It's a breezy, sunny evening in the Berkshires. Outside my window the maple seeds whirl off the tree like mad; the next-door neighbor is mowing her lawn; the compost pile glimmers in the lowering sun. We spent the afternoon weeding and raking and planting annuals and herbs. The tomato plants wait by the vegetable garden for us to make their beds ready. Purple and fluorescent pink rhododendrons have exploded on the scene, along with white dogwood and pink-and-yellow horse chestnut blooms. Check out the slide show at the bottom of the page for more pictures of them—I promise the colors have not been enhanced!

This sort of day helps lift the stress that I've been feeling lately, with two major deadlines coming up in early July and all of a sudden it's JUNE!!! How the heck did that happen?!? I could have sat inside today and picked away at my work projects and maybe gotten a little more done on them and for sure felt wiped out and stressed out and gone on freaking out for another day. But I decided instead to put down the obligatory weights and pick up a trowel. So now my body is a little wiped out (this back is not so young anymore), but my soul is rested and ready to get back to work tomorrow. I can't believe it's already June…
