This slightly rude-looking picture is the answer to our ice dam problem, or so it seems so far. As I learned from an article on the
This Old House website, you fill pantyhose (we used a knee-high stocking) with ice melter, lay it on the roof in the area of the ice dam, and it melts a channel through the ice for water to drain off the roof instead of backing up and creating a water feature in the bathroom. James put the "ice-melty-thingy," as I so articulately call it, on the roof this morning and by this afternoon, no more drippy insidey!!! Yahoo! So, any of you with ice dam problems, I recommend the ice-melty-thingy. Cheap and effective. A simple solution to what has been a really discouraging problem all winter. Now if we could just fix our income tax problem that easily (and
cheaply)...

Yep, that ice-melty-thingie is definitely rude-picturey-thingie as well. I'd never heard of that solution--too bad we didn't know about it in the old house1 Fortunately, no such probs (so far) in the new place. Here's for stockings being able to eventually fix income taxes as well...
