Today's most inappropriate song from my great-grandmother's sheet music collection [the views espoused in these lyrics are not shared by the author of this blog!]:
Chong (He Come from Hong Kong) ~ words & music by Harold Weeks (c. 1919)
(verse 1)
Little Allee Fo Chong played all day in an oriental way, In a swell Chinese Café,
But Allee loved his rag the same as you,
And ev'ry evening when his work was thru,
Allee layed his Tom Tom down,
Pretty soon you hear this sound:
(chorus)
'Chong, he come from Hong Kong
Where Chineeman play allee day on a drum,
Chong no likee that song,
Where Chineeman cry 'way up high,
Singee sungay, mungay, chick-a-lick-a-fungay,
Chong, go back to Hong Kong,
I betcha he teachee his China girl how to dance, like in a trance;
Teachee peachee Melican* song,
All day long to his China girl in old Hong Kong.'
(verse 2)
Little Allee Fo Chong sailed away on the liner 'Sakoshay,'
For his home port far away,
He said, 'When I come back I bringee bride,
You see a China maiden by my side,
Allee know she wait for he,
Ev'ry day so patiently.'
(repeat chorus) [if you can stomach it]
*I'm guessing this means "American," said in a xenophobic mock-Chinese accent. I have no idea what "Sakoshay" means.
