Creating Jazz Liturgy -- February 27-29

Keynote: Kwasi Kena
liturgy = work of the people
disciplined, well-structured -- no sloppy stuff!
Must send a clear message.
Prepare for spontaneity.
Hone our craft.
(kenosis?)
"sermonic moment"!
Jazz --> common space
     -African, Protestant hymns, Latin [rhythms]
          - we need to think about including Asian, Middle Eastern
Live in the Present Tense  (see above comment)
Fight Nostalgia
(BUT --> something to be said for liturgy that transcends current human needs -- e.g., monks @ Genesee Abbey who simply include coffin in sanctuary [when monk dies] while performing same liturgy as performed every day --> God is constant, eternal  --Can there be a way to know both in your life?)
Polka Mass!!!  --to be relevant to our congregation, would need to do, what, Top 40 Mass?
Give the liturgy back to the people.
Hip Hop is first music in African American community to arise outside the church
