Reckoning

During the lighting of 11 candles during church this morning in memory of the 11 million Jews and others who were killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust, I found myself doing the math in my head to compare it to a loss Americans still feel viscerally:  the 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001.

11,000,000 ÷ 3,000 ≈ 3,700
3,700 ÷ 365 ≈ 10

(When I checked my math on the calculator later, it worked out to 10.046 years.)

If the attacks on September 11, 2001, happened every day for 10 years, we would reach the approximate number of lives taken in the Holocaust.

    x  365

  x  10

  =  HOLOCAUST

Hebrew
Y'hei sh'lama raba min sh'maya
May there be abundant peace from Heaven

Amen.
