Making the Bed

Thanks to a co-worker who cleaned out her overgrown perennial beds, we now have a new perennial bed in our front yard.  (Thank you, Shirley!)

What I put in:

Hens & Chicks, and Lilies of the Valley

Irises

What I took out:

What you see still around the new bed
(the rest to be removed later)

I love perennials because I can put them in the ground, pay almost no attention to them, and they grow and bloom and spread their beauty, then put themselves to bed for the winter and get up again in the spring, and grow and bloom and spread their beauty some more.  All I have to do is weed once in a while.  Cool.  My kind of gardening.

Just keep an eye on those lillies of the valley--they can take over! They were all over the place in our old house and I ended up having to keep yanking them out of places they were determined to invade at the expense of other plants. Lovely smell, but fairly aggressive spreading habit. It'll be nice for you to have the perennial bed, though! I'm a fan of irises but we don't currently have any in...
