James & Dianne at the Grand Canyon, 2003

This is one of my favorite pictures of us.  Jesse took it on a suddenly wintry day at the Grand Canyon in the winter of 2003.  The skies were blue when we arrived and then the snow came.  By the time we left, the roads were white and slippery.  Our rear-wheel-drive pickup truck almost didn't make it up the hill to the park exit.  It was nerve-wracking.  But snow was an unexpected treat for me after 6 years in hot, perpetually sunny Tucson.  If you ask me what "home" is, the first image my mind goes to is crimson sumac cones against the white snow of a northern winter.  That's why I look so happy in this picture.  That and the fact that James has his arm around me, wearing his sexy leather coat and rockin' black cowboy hat!  And sunglasses—in a snowstorm.  The man loves to wear shades.
